Week 1 summary for the new me

Submitted by Wheezy on Fri, 06/13/2014 - 16:29

Well OK, calling it week 1 might be a bit much since I actually started the week on Tuesday, but as I said in my first blog I am going to write a weekly report, so here goes.

Since it is the first week, I get Saturday & Sunday off, so my week does actually finish today.  I've progressed from learning the stretches & moves to putting them together in a 30 minute workout.  Lessons I've learnt;

Is this the new me, can I keep it up?

Now I'm working for myself, I don't get the hours walk each day, or the exercise of carrying bags to & from Manchester. During a conversation in Edinburgh last week, someone recommended I look up YRG Yoga.

I've just done my first workout & loved it. Yes it was challenging, yes I was shaking but that is good (apparently). I am going to try & keep this up, so I use all m muscle each time I do it, have a workout to stick to & hopefully gain some core strength as well as better muscle control as the session go along. I have to try this out.

Linux (Kubuntu) on Dell Latitude E5430

Submitted by Falken on Thu, 04/25/2013 - 21:50

tl;dr important stuff all works. Minor stuff like finger print scanner easily fixable

The hardware is 'certified' by Canonical but this is meaningless because it doesn't say what of the many options Dell offer for the E5430 was used. It also doesn't list correct details for hardware such as Bluetooth, or even that the finger print scanner exists. And there is no way to submit fixes. And the contact us page is 404 compliant. So let's hope Google finds this for you instead :-)

Family research - Glenny/Glenney

Submitted by Wheezy on Fri, 01/18/2013 - 16:30

Having been contacted by someone about Pop (Alexander Thomas Glenny 1882 - 1965) I gained momentum to again try to find the truth behind the rumour we were banished from Scotland to Ireland & changed the spelling of Glenney by dropping the second "e".

It would appear there is a story on the web about James Wilmott Glenny (born 1800)  being disinherited due to his marriage with a Mariah Campbell (rival scottish clans).  The post shows James & one of his brothers, William then moved to Ireland.

ColdFusion forgets to use UTF-8 files after logs rotated

Submitted by Falken on Wed, 12/19/2012 - 10:03

For a long time, it's been recommended to set up Linux's logrotate system to manage the size of cfserver.log, which can easily grow to be a very large size on production systems, and ColdFusion seems unable to manage itself, unlike the other logs.

I recently discovered however, that a restart of ColdFusion via logrotate was changing the way files were written and read.

Glenny research quandry

Submitted by Wheezy on Sun, 06/17/2012 - 21:46

Right on my tree I have a Jack Glenny born c.1902,  son of Walter Glenny & Lilian (nee Neate) married to (nee Nellie Welsh) with a son Michael born c.1940. I can't fin him on the 1911 census, but have got his brother Walter & his sister Harriet with their Dad at their Grandfathers house.

Any idea how I can find out where Jack was in 1911?

Thanks

Glenny research

I love having access to the census the amount of information you can obtain is amazing, however....

My G.Grandad Thomas Armstrong Glenny is shown in 1911 as living with his wife, his son Walter, his daughter Maria Julia & 2 grand children Walter John Wetherall & Harrietta Kathleen Mia only I don't know who is their parent. I am guessing probably Maria, but wondered if anyone out there new the answer before I ordered their birth certificates.

I am going to have a look at some of Walter & Maria's siblings to see if I am missing any of their details.

Dell have abandoned Linux users, no matter what Ubuntu say about it

Submitted by Falken on Mon, 01/23/2012 - 19:24

I got a Dell laptop a few years ago, and while scouting around for it's replacement I noticed the Ubuntu Linux folks are still proud to say their stuff not only runs on Dell kit still, but that it's available to purchase and have supported direct from Dell:

"purchase Ubuntu on Dell"
